Deb Haaland, who manages the US government’s trust responsibilities with native tribes in her role as Secretary of the Interior, will on Friday discuss the Indigenous voice with Labor senator Pat Dodson.
Ms Haaland is a member of the Pueblo of Laguna and a 35th generation New Mexican, in a formal address at the USAsia Centre in Perth on Tuesday she did not mention the Albanese government’s proposal to give a constitutional shield to an Indigenous advisory body. However, in a speech that focused on land management and climate change, she stressed the importance of consulting with Indigenous peoples.
“There is much to be gained when we respect and integrate Indigenous knowledge into our collaborative initiatives,” she said.
“It is a fundamental shift in how Indigenous communities are treated.”
