‘I want the violence to stop’: Jacinta Price condemns violence in Indigenous communities

Country Liberal Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has shared images of her injured grandmother, calling for action against violence in Indigenous communities.

‘Not good enough’: Media underreporting domestic violence in Indigenous communities

Indigenous senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has issued a plea for Australians to recognise violence in Aboriginal communities after her grandmother was allegedly attacked.

The Country Liberal senator from the Northern Territory shared photos of her injured grandmother, Tess Napaljarri Ross, on Facebook on Wednesday night, calling on those in “leafy green suburbs” to imagine their relatives had been hurt.

Her cousin’s four-year-old son had also been repeatedly threatened by other children in the community, Senator Price wrote.

“Imagine this was your grandmother or your four-year-old son,” she wrote. “It’s not good enough that vulnerable Australian women, children and men suffer because their suffering makes a handful of people feel offended if it’s brought to their attention.

“It’s not good enough to ignore the maimed and battered because privileged ‘First Nations’ people feel uncomfortable about the reality of black on black violence. Grandstanding over hurt feelings ensures the violence continues.”

Ms Ross was an Indigenous elder but had not received the respect this typically warranted, Senator Price said. Ms Ross had been attacked by a younger woman and had her head “split open”. She required hospital treatment.

“This is what life on a community like Yuendumu looks like,” she wrote. “Community led violence is ignored and at times even encouraged.”

She ended the post by tagging politicians including Anthony Albanese, the Labor and Greens parties, and several news outlets including Four Corners and The Guardian.

Senator Price, the former deputy mayor of Alice Springs, was elected to the Senate in 2022. Her grandmother was part of a traditional ceremony in July held to mark her entering into parliament.

“My goal is to halt the pointless virtue signalling and focus on the solutions that bring real change,” Senator Price said during her first speech.
