In a historic move Aussie female Olympians grace Vogue’s cover
Australia’s top women Olympians, in a historic move, have graced the cover of Vogue Australia for the very first time.
Some of Australia’s top female Olympians, in a historic move, have graced the cover of Vogue Australia for the very first time.
Matildas star Mary Fowler, champion swimmer Emma McKeon and one of the greatest paddlers of all time, Jessica Fox, are some of the key athletes featured in the magazine’s stunning Olympic portfolio to mark the Games, which begin in Paris next month.
Front and centre of the issue is Fowler, whose profile has rocketed since the Women’s World Cup last year.
Fowler, at just 21, has already competed in her first Olympics and two World Cups, and she reveals how her eyes are set firmly on winning a medal, something the Matildas haven’t quite been able to do – yet.
She also says that being an Olympian is the ultimate achievement in her book.
“My proudest moment was being picked for the last Olympics. It was just the only childhood dream I had, so it was crazy that I actually achieved that,” Fowler tells Vogue Australia. “It still blows my mind that I’m in that category of athletes being able to go there, so I just feel really grateful.”
Pulling together Vogue Australia’s Olympic portfolio proved no easy feat, says executive editor Jessica Montague.
“We shot the 12 athletes over a four-month period across multiple states,” Montague says of the project that also features the likes of 14-year-old skater Chloe Covell, Olympic star swimmer Kaylee McKeown, world champion Nina Kennedy and rising track star Torrie Lewis.
“I’ve always said Vogue Australia punches above its weight, and this cover and portfolio will be among the best issues of Vogue in the world.”
Among the athletes opening up about their dreams for Paris is Jessica Fox. The world No.1 told Vogue Australia she feels she’s still yet to reach her full potential, saying: “I’m the most competitive person and I just want to be the best I can be.”
Boasting four Olympic medals (including that nail-biting gold medal run in the C1 slalom in Tokyo), as well as 48 World Cup gold medals, and 10 World Championship titles, Fox is ready to defend the gold she won in Tokyo.
“I can be confident going into the Games that I’ve done everything that I can, and that whatever happens, my level of training is so high you know it’s going to be fine,” she says.
The Vogue Australia July 2024 issue will be on sale on Monday.
