Just two weeks ago, police and ambulance attended the Bondi apartment in Sydney’s east of the high-flying real estate agent who allegedly stabbed his close family friend in nearby Dover Heights on Monday.

Matthew Ramsay, who boasts of his involvement in real estate transactions for media organisations worth hundreds of millions of dollars, has been charged with cause wounding/grievous bodily harm with intent to murder.

A neighbour told The Australian that ambulance officers attended the 46-year-old’s Bellevue Hill apartment “five or six times in the last four or five months”.

Police allege Mr Ramsay stabbed a woman at her multimillion-dollar rental home on Weonga Road.

It is alleged the victim managed to remove the knife from Mr Ramsay before a group of tradesmen was able to assist.

Mr Ramsay was arrested by police at gunpoint a short time later in his Audi Q3 on Campbell Parade in Bondi.

Speaking outside his home, the victim’s husband said his wife was “doing the best she can … He (Mr Ramsay) was the best man at our wedding, godfather of our children … how do you think I feel?”

After spending the night in custody, Mr Ramsay did not appear at Waverley Local Court.

The court heard he is also facing a separate charge – not related to Monday’s incident – of allegedly shoplifting four bottles of flavoured milk, a Snickers bar and a packet of Mars Pods from a petrol station.

His lawyer did not apply for bail.

More details are emerging of the “highly intelligent man just on a self-destructive path”, following the incident in one of Sydney’s most exclusive streets.

It is understood he has previously spent time in hospital because of his “very poor liver”.

One former friend said Mr Ramsay, who is understood to have a young daughter, was “extremely self-absorbed”.

“You have a conversation with him, one minute it’s really nice, next thing you know he’s up on a pedestal trying to be better than you,” they said.

Mr Ramsay once boasted to pub-goers that he’d buy them all beers because he had done a property deal and netted $90,000 in commission.

“Sometimes he comes out with the most incredible things – you’d think, ‘Where did that come from?’ We weren’t even talking about anything like that,” a pub-goer said.

“He was going downhill, he was going down. Inside there, there’s a decent bloke, but he’s lost himself,” they said.

One person who saw him regularly at a popular Bondi waterhole told The Australian Mr Ramsay drank “excessively”.

“He’d go up and order a schooner and a freaking shot of Wild Turkey,” one man said.

“A normal person would just finish one drink; he’d finish two and start getting more.”
