Queensland Health Minister Steven Miles has backed a high-profile discrimination finding against his department, despite his officials weighing an appeal against the $1.5 million judgment.
Former Liberal National MP Chris Davis won the payout on Monday over a Queensland Health decision in 2014 to withdraw an advertised position for a senior medical officer at the Royal Brisbane Hospital rather than interview him. Dr Davis, a former assistant health minister, had fallen out with the ruling Newman LNP government. The Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal found the retired politician was the only qualified candidate and deemed the official in charge of recruiting the doctor, Malcolm Stamp, was guided to halt the recruitment process because of Dr Davis’s politics.
Although Queensland Health was yesterday seeking further legal advice on the case, Labor ministers used the QCAT decision to score political points against the LNP opposition.
