MYEFO: national disability insurance scheme payments hit $880m

Almost $880m will be paid to the NDIS by state and territory governments as they close down their programs.

Almost $880 million will be paid to the national disability insurance scheme by state and territory governments as they close down their disability service programs during the rollout, the budget update shows.

The payments will be made by states that have signed transition agreements to the full $22 billion NDIS, funnelled through the federal government and transferred to the agency that delivers the NDIS.

NSW, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania have signed agreements for the full rollout of the NDIS, while negotiations are continuing with other jurisdictions, including Western Australia, which is completing a trial of the scheme and its MyWay model.

The ACT will reach full rollout earlier than other jurisdictions in September.

Total revenue from the NDIS counted in the budget update hits $950m when small gains from the Department of Health are factored in, as people in special cases will get support from the scheme rather than the health system.

The NDIS, when fully realised in 2019-20, will support 460,000 people with severe and profound disabilities who need support to live, work and be a part of the community.
