Good Friday Appeal tally passes $10m, with regions also to benefit
The Good Friday Appeal has raised more than $10m, as Australians continue to donate generously.
The generosity of everyday Australians shone bright on Friday as the fundraising tally for the 94th Good Friday Appeal passed $10m.
The tally hit $10,002,875 at 5.30pm following Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan’s announcement of a $1m government donation while reflecting on her “incredibly challenging” experience in hospital following the birth of her now 13-year-old daughter.
In a press conference at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Ms Allan described the care her family received from the Royal Children’s Hospital, where her daughter spent her first Easter. “Back then it was incredibly tough (and) incredibly challenging,” she said.
“It’s an incredibly special place, which is why I’m really humbled and proud today … to announce the Victorian government is making a $1m contribution to the Good Friday Appeal.
“Every dollar has that magical potential to save lives … I know it because I’ve seen my daughter’s life saved by the work of the RCH.”
GFA chair Penny Fowler also announced 41 regional health services would share $3m as part of a regional funding initiative, a significant increase from last year when six health services shared $2.5m.
“It expands our reach and also we can help more children … so they don’t have to travel into Melbourne and they can receive the same excellent care,” Ms Fowler said. The GFA has raised more than $468m since 1931, which Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas attributed to the generosity of donors and volunteers.
“I just want to extend my thanks to every Victorian who will make a donation today and … all those volunteers right around the state who are rattling a tin today to raise funds for the Good Friday Appeal, because it really is the people’s appeal. Every dollar counts,” she said.
