An opulent Gold Coast estate with towering Grecian statues and an elaborate pool complete with 24-carat gold tiles has been crowned Australia’s most popular property of 2024.
The sprawling River Cove Mansion at Helensvale was the most viewed “for sale” listing on property portal Realestate.com.au this year, racking up 157,561 views over the past 12 months. It was one of just three properties on the market to record more than 100,000 clicks, with homes in southeast Queensland, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide also populating the top 10 list.
Tobacco tycoon Travers ‘Candyman’ Beynon owns 36 River Cove Place, which has been a well-known party pad for Gold Coast socialites for more than a decade.
The impressive gated estate has 13 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms, as well as a ballroom complete with 8m-high ceilings, a professional gym and a wellness centre.
It commands a 5647sq m plot wrapped by the Coomera River, boasting 175m of absolute waterfront and boat access to the Broadwater and Pacific Ocean.
Car lovers can also take advantage of the collection showroom and additional “everyday garages” that have space for nine vehicles.
Queensland Sotheby International Realty agent Mark Hadir said the excessive property had the attributes sought-after by cashed-up locals, interstate southerners and international buyers.
“It’s over the top, for sure; however, it also serves as a blank canvas for the next owners to personalise,” Mr Hadir said. “The main attractions include river frontage, deepwater access, exclusivity, privacy, and spaciousness.”
Best offers are due by January 30. Mr Hadir expects prices to fall between $18m and $20m.
The Gold Coast address is in stark contrast to the once-stately residence on the outskirts of Melbourne that ranked second on the most-clicked list, attracting 143,688 views.
The vacant and worse-for-wear 650 Woori Yallock Road house at Cockatoo, 48km southeast of the CBD, has garnered a cult following online among urban explorers who have visited and added to the graffiti that now covers every wall of the property. First National Real Estate Ranges Mick Dolphin said the home had developed a “life of its own” since the original owners died 10 to 15 years ago despite changing hands in 2014.
The house is still for sale with an advertised guide of $900,000 to $950,000.
A Toorak mansion at 2 Macquarie Road has now been secured in a pre-Christmas deal for an undisclosed price, which Forbes Global Properties director Michael Gibson claimed was the biggest Victorian sale of the year. It was advertised between $70m and $75m and ranked as the third-most popular property in 2024.
On the edge of Sydney Harbour, a Mediterranean-inspired showstopper at 69 Wolseley Rd, Point Piper, snagged more than 82,000 clicks.
The owners – Retail Apparel Group co-founder Stephen Leibowitz and his wife Pam – are hoping to fetch $65m for the prized address on the nation’s most expensive street.
