Gavin “Capable” Preston called the man accused of leaving explosives under his car a “goose” and lobbed other sledges at his rivals in old social media posts from prison, according to reports.

Preston, who was shot dead at a cafe in Melbourne on Saturday, was suspected of, but never charged with, shooting former Bandidos enforcer Toby Mitchell in front of a Brunswick gym in 2012.

In retaliation for the suspected attack, another notorious crime figure, Christopher Binse, stalked Preston and tracked his partner before detonating explosives under his car.

The Herald Sun reported Preston enlisted a contact to post a series of notes to social media in 2017, including a shot at Binse.

“He talks that much shit, the filth didn’t even charge him,” he wrote at the time.

“All he ever did was stalk my wife, and take photos of her once I was in jail and he felt safe.

“I never saw the goose out there once.”

Preston was never charged with shooting Mitchell but he was suspected of it.

After a lifetime of crime, Preston himself was shot and killed in a brazen daylight attack at the weekend. He was sitting outside at a suburban cafe at Keilor East, in Melbourne’s northwest, eating breakfast when a masked gunman executed him.

Police are still searching for two masked assailants over the shooting, which left Abbas Junior Maghnie seriously injured.

The Australian on Tuesday revealed a black Audi getaway car used by the two figures after gunning down the notorious crime boss is believed to have been parked opposite the site of the attack for three hours before the ambush, according to a worker from a nearby business.

The attack left nearby patrons terrified and the community wondering if the city was on the brink of a return to gangland shootings of the early 2000s.

Preston also posted about former AFL-player Jake King, who has been linked with Mitchell in the past.

“Lately I’ve been hearing rumours about you being a gangster about town,” Preston wrote.

“Just some friendly advice little man, the rules are very different to the game you’re used to, there’s a lot more on the line than four points.

“Injuries are a lot more significant than a shoulder re-co (reconstruction).

“If you don’t believe me, just ask your mate … you might end up in situations beyond your imagination.”

As well, he denied shooting Mitchell, the Herald Sun reported.

“I have continuously been accused by the media of shooting some bloke named Toby Mitchell outside the Bandido Club House in Brunswick,” he stated.

“I just want to set the record straight: I did not shoot Toby … I just wanted to clear that up.”

On Sunday, a Victoria Police spokesman said homicide detectives would continue to investigate the targeted daylight murder. No arrests have been made over the ambush.

On Saturday, Crime Command Acting Superintendent Mark Hatt said police believed the attack was “linked to organised crime”.
