Fresh charges including possession of child abuse material have been laid against Mert Ney, the 21-year-old man accused of murdering one woman and stabbing another in a violent rampage in Sydney’s CBD in August.

Ney smiled and massaged his hands as he appeared via video link from Silverwater prison for his committal hearing at Central Local Court on Tuesday morning.

Court documents confirm three new charges have been laid against Ney, including possession of child abuse material, possession of a prohibited drug and being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.

It is alleged the child abuse material was found on a USB in Ney’s possession. It is not known if this is the same USB that was found on Ney’s person on the day of the fatal attack which allegedly contained information on recent massacres in the US and New Zealand.

He is also accused of possessing 1.6 grams of cannabis on the day of the attack.

Ney, accused of killing of 24-year-old Michaela Dunn and stabbing of 41-year-old Lin Bo on August 13, had already been charged with murder, attempted murder, wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, intentionally choking a person with recklessness and common assault.

Ney’s lawyer, Zemerai Khatiz, said outside the court on Tuesday morning his client’s mental state was “still bad” and indicated he would be pleading not guilty to the new charges.

Prosecutors were told that documents from the Royal Prince Alfred hospital had been provided to assist the case.

The court heard Ney’s mobile phone records, material from his Facebook and medical records would all be included in the brief of evidence.

Ney did not apply for bail and it was formally refused. His case has been stood over to December 10.

NSW Police will allege in their statement of facts that Ney arrived at Ms Dunn’s apartment at 1.44pm on August 13 after booking an appointment for sex with the former University of Notre Dame student.

Just 13 minutes later, police will allege he killed Ms Dunn, filmed her body on his phone and then sent the clip to a friend.

He is then alleged to have ran out onto Clarence Street brandishing a bloodied butcher’s knife, yelling “Alluhau Akbar” and telling bystanders that he had a bomb.

He is accused of stabbing Ms Bo in the back before being tackled to the ground by bystanders, who used milk crates to keep him detained until authorities arrived.

Ney was taken to RPA hospital for a mental health assessment and to recover from self-inflicted stab wounds and has been behind bars ever since.

Ney has also been charged with “intentionally choke person with recklessness” and common assault in relation to an alleged attack on his sister on August 7.

This was Ney’s third court appearance. The last time he appeared before court he was ordered to have blood taken and his genital area swabbed as part of an “intimate forensic” testing order.
