Former Liberal NSW MP Rory Amon has been released from custody after breaching his bail conditions over alleged child sex offending.
The former member for Pittwater was arrested at Sydney’s Day St police station late on Wednesday night.
Amon was released on Thursday from custody after his solicitor told Sydney’s Downing Centre Court that his client “simply forgot” to report to police one day – a requirement of his bail conditions – but appeared the following day as normal.
Prosecutors agreed it was not a “serious breach” and that Amon’s bail conditions should be maintained in its current form. The ex-MP was released from police custody on Thursday afternoon.
Amon resigned from parliament in August 2024 after he was slapped with a host of charges pertaining to alleged sex offending with a 13-year-old minor in 2017.
He will stand trial after pleading not guilty to five counts of having sexual intercourse with a teenage boy, two counts of attempted sexual intercourse with the same alleged victim, and committing an act of indecency toward a minor.
The charges stem from the alleged sexual assault of the 13-year-old boy in Mona Vale, in Sydney’s Northern Beaches, in 2017.
Amon was refused police bail and was set to appear at Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday.
The allegations took place when Amon was a Northern Beaches councillor.
Prosecutors allege that Amon and the boy first met on the “gay hook-up website, Squirt”, before the conversation moved to Snapchat.
The teenager allegedly lied about his age to establish a profile, before later allegedly telling Amon he was 15.
Prosecutors also allege Amon told the alleged victim that he was 17 years old.
The ex-MP is set to face a 10-day trial in the state’s district court in February.
Amon denies the allegations and has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
His resignation prompted an October by-election where independent Jacqui Scruby snared the seat from the Liberals.
In the months since, Amon has been spotted working in the hospitality sector, most notably at bars at Sydney’s Hay St Market and Leichhardt Oval.
Amon’s bail conditions include living at a Northern Beaches address, daily police reporting, not contacting the alleged victim.
