Julie Bishop pledges $5m to Gaza
AUSTRALIA has pledged $5 million to assist Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
AUSTRALIA has pledged $5 million to assist Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as Labor MPs drew internal criticism for signing an open letter accusing Israel of targeting of civilians.
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced money would be delivered to the UN Relief and Works Agency, World Vision and APHEDA to provide emergency food, medical supplies, hygiene kits, and psychosocial support.
The open letter — spearheaded by Labor MP Melissa Parke — accused Israel of targeting hospitals, mosques and a centre for children with disabilities. “Over 1000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed since Israel started its military attack on Gaza three weeks ago ... including an estimated 168 children,” read the letter. “Collective punishment is not permitted under the Geneva conventions and is a war crime.”
Michael Danby, one of two Jewish federal Labor MPs, said Israel should be expected to continue its campaign until the Hamas rocket fire ceases.
