First official gala portraits show Australian-born royal wearing crown jewels for first time
The Australian-born royal has flaunted the crown jewels for the first time as the first official gala portraits of Queen Mary and King Frederik X are released.
The first official gala portraits of Australian-born Queen Mary and King Frederik X have been released following their ascension in January to the Danish throne.
The occasion marked the first time Mary has worn the crown jewels, an emerald set complete with tiara, necklace, earrings and large brooch.
The set, a gift from Christian VIII to Queen Caroline Amalie, is reportedly one of four the queen will be able to wear, and is usually on display in The Treasury at Rosenborg Castle.
In keeping with tradition, she also wore a miniature portrait of the king in a bow of Order of Dannebrog ribbon.
Frederik sported several historical items for the portraits, of which kings and Queen Margrethe wore in their reigns.
The royal couple both wore the Order of the Elephant on chains, which is traditionally worn on special occasions.
The portraits, taken by Steen Evald in the Green Room at Christiansborg Palace, will be displayed in state institutions across the globe.
The milestone moment for the couple comes after Margrethe II announced her abdication on New Year’s Eve 2023, with their succession officially taking place on January 14 this year.
