A former high-profile sports presenter has been charged by police following an alleged domestic violence incident over the weekend.

Former Channel 9 presenter Cam Williams, 59, has been charged by NSW Police after an alleged “domestic-related” incident in the Hunter Region in early hours of Sunday morning.

NSW Police told NCA NewsWire that a 59-year-old man was arrested after officers attended a Putty Rd address shortly before 1am on Sunday in response to reports of a domestic violence incident.

They said the man was subsequently taken to Cessnock Police Station and charged with common assault.

NSW Police also took out an apprehended violence order against Mr Williams before he was granted bail.

The Daily Telegraph reported Mr Williams had spent a weekend getaway with friends and said police would allege the parties had been drinking.

Mr Williams, whose career at Nine included stints at the Today show and Sydney’s 6pm news, left the network abruptly in March, citing health concerns.

He is due to appear before the Singleton Magistrates Court on Thursday.

In a statement, M Williams’ lawyer Paul McGirr told NCA NewsWire that the matter would be contested.

“Mr Williams is a loving father and asks that we respect his entire family’s privacy through this difficult time” Mr McGirr said in a statement.

“At this stage the matter is contested. We will be seeking a brief of evidence and go from there.”
