Exclusive arrest video shows Shandee Blackburn’s ex

Gripping new video shows the moment an ex-boyfriend was arrested in the murder case of Shandee Blackburn, subject of The Australian’s gripping cold-case podcast.

Homicide detectives with Shandee Blackburn’s ex-boyfriend John Peros in 2014. He was later acquitted of her murder but a coroner later found he was responsible.

Mr Peros was led into an austere interview room on level two of Queensland Police headquarters in Roma Street, Brisbane, in early September 2014.

The murder investigation had been going just over a year and a half.

Already in custody on another matter, he had been transported from Woodford Correctional Centre shackled and dressed in prison-issue clothes.

Police had a video they wanted to play Mr Peros, and left him alone in the windowless room with it playing on a screen.

They wanted to show him CCTV of his car from the night of the murder, and of a running figure they believed was him.

Mr Peros steadfastly refused to look at the screen.

When he wouldn’t be interviewed, accusing police of “victimisation and harassment”, Detective Sergeant Lisa Elkins charged him with Shandee’s murder.

Officers then collected samples of his hair, accidentally cut the back of his exposed neck with scissors in the process.

Mr Peros was acquitted of the murder by a jury in less than two hours. He denies any involvement.
