Former AFL player Liam Jurrah is in custody after allegedly breaking into a house and assaulting a woman with a machete in his Northern Territory hometown of Yuendumu.

Jurrah, 33, was last month charged with unlawful entry with intent to commit an offence and aggravated assault in relation to the August 2 incident at the troubled remote outback community.

The ex-Melbourne forward was refused bail when he appeared in Alice Springs Local Court before Judge Sarah McNamara on August 30.

He has been remanded in custody until his next court mention on October 13.

Jurrah, known as the Warlpiri Wizard, booted 81 goals from 36 games between 2009 and 2012.

He was the first initiated Aboriginal man to play AFL.

Judge McNamara on Tuesday refused applications from The Australian to access court documents and audio related to Jurrah’s matter.

Just 11 months ago Jurrah told The Age that he was “in a good place now” and that his life was back on track.
