Two 16-year-old boys are fighting for life after the stolen vehicle they were travelling in collided with another car before driving into a pole in Melbourne’s west.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the “extremely serious” incident, which involved a Haval Jolion colliding with a Toyota Camry before crashing into a pole at the intersection of Dohertys Rd and Derrimut Rd in Tarneit about 1.25am on Sunday.

Police later revealed the Haval was stolen from a shopping centre carpark on Hummingbird Blvd on May 10.

Two 16-year-old male occupants of the stolen car were taken to hospital with life-threatening upper body injuries, while a third 16-year-old male occupant sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

“Fortunately, the occupants of the Toyota did not sustain any serious injuries,” a police spokesman confirmed.

MCIU Acting Sergeant Melanie MacFarlane said on Sunday the two teens in critical condition were “fighting for their lives” in hospital.

“They’ve got really serious injuries that were completely and entirely preventable,” she told the ABC.

“The scene was chaotic and catastrophic. The damage to the vehicle was extreme.”

Sergeant MacFarlane said the occupants of the Toyota were “lucky” to escape unharmed.

“They’re extremely lucky,” she said.

“They were fortunate enough not to have any injuries as a result of this collision and managed to walk away from what could have been an absolutely disastrous day for everybody.”

She said the behaviour of the youths was “out of control”.

“This was entirely preventable and now they’re all in hospital fighting for their lives.”

Police have urged any witnesses with CCTV, dashcam footage or other information that could assist investigations to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
