A major search operation is underway to locate a man who disappeared after jumping off a cliff into the Nepean River in Sydney’s West.

Emergency services rushed to Norton Basin at Mulgoa, located about 20km south of Penrith, at about 11am on Saturday.

Police have been told the man, believed to be aged in his 60s, had been fishing before telling his female partner he was going to go for a swim.

She then raised the alarm when the man failed to resurface from the water.

A search involving officers from Nepean Police Area Command, specialist members of State Emergency Services’ swift-water rescue team, Fire and Rescue NSW, and NSW Ambulance is now underway.

PolAir is also en route to assist in the operation.

Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or through their website.
