Education Minister Jason Clare has lashed out at a Liberal senator’s comments blaming the party’s low youth vote on “Marxist” teachers.

Mr Clare responded to remarks by NSW senator Hollie Hughes, saying her comments reflected the denial from the Liberal Party about what really cost them the election.

Conservatives “used to say the reds are under the bed”, Mr Clare told Sky News on Sunday. “Now, apparently, the commies are in the classroom. This is just crazy, isn’t it?

“More denial from the Liberal Party. If they think that they lost the election because all teachers are Marxists, then I don’t think they’re looking in the right direction.”

Education Minister ‘completely fine’ with basic skills going ‘backwards’

Senator Hughes said at a Sydney Institute federal election post-mortem last Tuesday that when kids were at school, they’re being taught “absolute left-wing rubbish”.

“We’ve got an education system that’s basically run by Marxists … When you’ve got a problem in your education system, it’s going to take a generation to fix it,” she said. “Maybe parents need to turn their internet off, to one hour a day… ”

A person in the audience cut her off, saying “Don’t denigrate young people that way”.

Senator Hughes continued, saying her three kids “don’t have any comprehension” of how to get a mortgage … “There is a generational issue.”
