Former NSW Labor minister Milton Orkopoulos has been charged with three counts of engaging in child prostitution and a further 12 historic sexual assault offences dating back to the 1990s.

Detectives from Lake Macquarie Police District arrested the 62-year-old former Swansea MP at Silverwater Jail, in western Sydney, on Monday morning.

Police will allege Orkopoulos sexually abused two young boys who were allegedly known to him — one of whom was under the age of 14 — on separate occasions over a number of years in the 1990s at locations in Lake Macquarie and on the NSW mid-north coast.

Lake Macquarie Commander Superintendent Danny Sullivan said NSW police formed Strike Force Glenwarrie after Orkopoulos’s alleged victims came forward in January to accuse the former Labor powerbroker of sexual assault.

He said the alleged offending had taken place while Orkopoulos was an elected member of the NSW parliament. “They occurred throughout the 1990s, from the early parts of the ’90s all the way through to the end,” Superintendent Sullivan said.

The charges relate to allegations Orkopoulos forced a child under the age of 14 to participate in child prostitution along with five counts of aggravated sexual assault on a victim under the age of 16.

The former politician was also charged with five counts of aggravated indecent assault of victims under the age of 16.
