Veterans Affairs Minister Michael Ronaldson has warned the word Anzac cannot be trivialised, saying a disastrous Woolworths advertising campaign should be a “salutary reminder” of its unique nature.

The supermarket giant came under fire after it launched an ad with its logo and the slogan “Lest We Forget: ANZAC 1915-2015, Fresh in Our Memories” before quickly pulling it down on Tuesday night.

Senator Ronaldson said he made immediate contact with Woolworths when he was alerted to the ad, which was created to support the RSL and Camp Gallipoli, but no further action was required. Woolworths could have faced a fine of up to $50,000.

“I will give them due credit and acknowledge that they moved very quickly,” he said.

Woolworths said it regretted its brand had caused offence.
