Scott Morrison has left the door open to a royal commission into veterans’ suicides amid a push from Labor leader Anthony Albanese for an inquiry into why some former soldiers are taking their own lives.

Mr Albanese endorsed a public campaign on Tuesday after meeting Julie-Ann Finney, whose son David took his own life after battling with PTSD.

“We can do better. We must do better. We need a royal commission into veteran suicide,” Mr Albanese said.

“Men and women sign up to defend our country and our way of life. They are deserving of our respect and in return we must do everything we can to ensure that both while they serve our nation and indeed after as well, we look after their interests.”

Official figures released last week revealed more than 400 serving and ex-service men and women have taken their own lives since 2001.

“All options are on the table to address this complex issue and to ensure veterans get the best support and care,” a spokesman for the Prime Minister said.

If you or someone you know needs support or is considering suicide, call Lifeline (131114), Kids Helpline (1800 551 800), Beyond Blue (1300 224 636) or 000 if a life is in immediate danger
