Coronavirus: The most infectious suburbs in your state

Areas most affected by the coronavirus could be the first to face tougher lockdown restrictions. Is yours one?

Sydney’s eastern suburbs, including Bondi Beach, have emerged as a coronavirus hotspot in NSW.

Sydney’s eastern suburbs, which attracted the ire of authorities when crowds flocked to Bondi Beach and failed to practice social distancing, is emerging as a COVID-19 infection hotspot.

Figures released by the NSW Department of Health on Thursday showed Waverley, the eastern suburbs locality which takes in Bondi Beach, had the highest infection rate in NSW with 105 cases.

The areas most affected by the virus could be the first to face tougher lockdown restrictions as authorities try to flatten the disease’s arc of infection.

Health officials last weekend fenced off Bondi and other eastern suburbs beaches after “unacceptable’’ numbers of people flocked to the sand.

Central Sydney had the state’s second highest rate of infection with 69 cases, followed by the Northern Beaches, 68, Woollahra, 66, Central Coast 44, and Canterbury-Bankstown in the city’s west with 44 cases.

Victoria

Victorian coronavirus victims can be traced virtually along socio-economic lines, Department of Health and Human Services figures show.

The highest number of victims is in the local government area of Stonnington, which is one of the richest in the country. With 57 confirmed cases, it includes suburbs like Toorak and South Yarra.

Mornington Peninsula, where Toorak goes to retire, has the next number of victims at 36.

This is followed by Melbourne at 32 victims.

This could be because of the high number of foreign students in the local government area.

This is followed by Boroondara, which is another wealthy area, that includes Hawthorn and Kew. There were 29 victims.

The infection pattern in Victoria shows why authorities are promoting social isolation.

While the source of the spread in Victoria has not been pinpointed, at least five Geelong Grammar parents contracted the virus at a cocktail party for a Timbertop family earlier this month; a boarder also has it.

It also has spread to others via a 21st birthday party and been blamed for potentially dozens of cases across Melbourne’s wealthy inner east and southeast.

Queensland

In Queensland the virus has shown little regard for social standing.

Data released by local hospital and health service district shows the city’s Metro North (144) and Metro South (123) have the highest numbers of infection.

The Gold Coast has 91 cases, the Sunshine Coast 56 cases, while the Darling Downs, of which Toowoomba is the largest centre, has 17 cases.

The West Moreton district, which takes in Ipswich also has 17 cases, which the Wide Bay district which takes in Bundaberg and Hervey Bay has 12 cases. Cairns in far north Queensland has 12 cases and Townsville has 11 cases.

Queensland’s case load has been fanned by a birthday at a Noosa restaurant where 30 guests and staff were infected before travelling back to their homes around the state.

Among the party was a guest who had just returned from Aspen, in US, who is now suspected to have unknowingly had the virus.

The party was held a day before the Scott Morrison extended travel restrictions to making it mandatory for people returning from overseas to self-isolate for 14 days.

WA

Only regional data is available for Western Australia, with all but 18 cases of 231 cases in Perth.
