Coronavirus forces Rick Stein to close Bannisters restaurants at Mollymook, Port Stephens

From ocean to plate, every day. But that’s over for Rick Stein, who’s been forced to close a pair of iconic restaurants.

From ocean to plate, every day. But that’s now over for Rick Stein CBE, who has been forced to close the iconic Bannisters, overlooking the coastline at Mollymook; and his new restaurant at Port Stephens.

“So we’ve now closed,” said Mr Stein, who is famous as a TV chef, and as the author of dozens of hugely popular cookbooks.

“I can’t say I’m happy about that. Not happy about it at all. But I do think the government has done the right thing. The coronavirus is so serious.

“But Sas (his Australian wife, Sarah) .. and I would just like to thank our star staff .... I mean it’s mean impossibly difficult and of course, the future is so uncertain, and it’s just their attitude is so uplifting.

“Anyway, we will re-open. I wish you health and safety until that glorious day.”

Bannisters has been a “destination restaurant” for many people, with sweeping views over the NSW south coast.

The food is locally sourced, and cooked fresh; there’s accommodation, and while last week’s ban on big weddings hit hard, this week’s ban on restaurants forced Mr Stein’s hand.

He had been hoping to find a way forward, because his businesses provide so many opportunities for local fishermen, chefs, sommeliers, and wait staff.

Mr Stein, normally so gregarious, announced the move with great sadness on Facebook.

In a note, Mrs Stein said: “Due to the recent government social restrictions, our restaurants in Mollymook and Port Stephens will be closed to the public until further notice.

“Ricky and I would like to thank our wonderful Bannisters family for working so hard as the situation has unfolded and for their diligence during such a difficult time. It is tricky to comprehend how quickly things have changed and the implications COVID-19 will have for our wonderful industry, as well as many others.

“To our gorgeous guests, we will be back, stronger and better than ever. Hoping that everyone stays safe, happy and healthy during these challenging times.”

The couple, who are normally such globetrotters, producing TV shows and books such as Rick Stein’s Spain, and Rick Stein’s Secret France, will stay settled in NSW until the crisis passes.

“It’s nice to be settled but it’s during extremely difficult times,” said Sarah. “Very lucky to be in isolation with my best friend.”
