Coronavirus: Daniel Andrews to take a break after 120 straight days

After 120 press conferences in a row, Daniel Andrews will not front the media on Saturday, handing over the briefing to Health Minister, Martin Foley.

The Premier’s daily updates have been a fixture of the government’s pandemic response.

Mr Andrews and the state’s chief health officer Brett Sutton on Friday urged Victorians to act responsibly this weekend and follow rules as the public move to enjoy more freedoms due to the easing of restrictions.

“Each and every one of us has got a part to play,” Mr Andrews said. “We are all in this together and we’ll all pay a price, all of us, one way or another, if we don’t play that part.’

“Following the rules, and I know the rules are not fun but they’re there to keep us open, they’re there to keep us safe.”

Ahead of the weekend, he reiterated that visits to homes were limited to one visiting event a day.

“I know that’s challenging but if we want to keep doing that, and not be locked down again and unable to see the people that we love, then we have just got to keep vigilant, we have just got to keep doing this,” he said.

“We have to be, as a community, as stubborn as this virus. It’s not going away. It spreads rapidly, It spreads silently. We have come so far and done so much that we just have to safeguard that.”

“What’s more, these last few months have to mean something, they have to be worth something. There’s a lot of pain and hurt out there, there’s grieving.”

Professor Sutton said the chance of a third wave hitting Melbourne were “minimal” but not zero.
