The man who kidnapped four-year-old Cleo Smith from a remote West Australian campsite in October 2021 and held her captive inside a doll-filled duplex for 18 days will finally be sentenced, even as a Corruption and Crime Commission probe into the policeman who rescued her continues.

Terence Darrell Kelly will be sentenced in the Perth District Court on April 5 before Chief Judge Julie Wager.

Police, after 18 days of searching, had found the preschooler in Kelly’s run-down public housing duplex in Carnarvon.

In a famous audio recording, Cleo told leading policeman Detective Senior Sergeant Cameron Blaine: “My name is Cleo.”

Sergeant Blaine was stood down from duty last September as result of a “co-operative investigation” between the CCC and WA Police Force.

The CCC this week confirmed the investigation was ongoing but refused to reveal its expected date of completion or the nature of any alleged misconduct.
