CFMEU administrator Mark Irving, KC, has been hospitalised after suffering chest pains but is recovering and expected to resume work next week.
Mr Irving, 57, was admitted to hospital on Saturday after experiencing chest pains.
Doctors conducted an angiogram which revealed a blocked artery.
A stent has been inserted to keep the artery open and improve blood flow.
An administration spokeswoman said Mr Irving “is recovering and expected back at work next week”. “The administration’s work is continuing,” she said.
In a statement on Monday, Employment and Workplace Relations Minister Amanda Rishworth said: “I wish Mark all the best with his recovery and am reassured the administration’s work will continue as planned until he returns”
Mr Irving, a barrister since 1997, has been the CFMEU administrator since August last year. His annual salary of $643,000 is being picked up by the union, not taxpayers.
The High Court is due to rule soon on a legal challenge to the administration.
Zach Smith quit as CFMEU national secretary last week, citing workload pressures and no longer wanting to carry responsibility for decisions made by Mr Irving.
