Brittany Higgins announces birth of baby boy
‘We’re both looking forward to getting to dote on the newest member of the family — forever grateful for all the love and support we’ve received,’ she said.
Former political staffer Brittany Higgins has welcomed her first child with husband David Sharaz.
She posted a picture of the baby with its face covered by a white heart, and the baby’s hand wrapped around Sharaz’s thumb, to Instagram on Sunday night, with the words: “Last night we welcomed out little boy into the world.
“A huge thank you to the amazing midwives, nurses and doctors for their care and kindness.
“We’re both looking forward to getting to dote on the newest member of the family — forever grateful for all the love and support we’ve received.”
Lisa Wilkinson commented a “Huge congratulations” on the post.
Higgins was a staffer for then defence minister Senator Reynolds when she alleged she had been raped by her colleague Bruce Lehrmann in Parliament House in 2019.
The scandal, which prompted a series of legal battles including a civil trial at which the judge ruled Mr Lehrmann had likely raped Ms Higgins, began in 2021.
Higgins married Sharaz, a former journalist, in Queensland in June 2024 and announced her pregnancy in July.
In December, 2023, the couple moved to Europe to “heal and escape the online attacks she received, particularly in the wake of the Channel 7 Spotlight program that elevated her rapist”, a spokesperson said.
Sharaz said they decided on France as it was close to some of his relatives in England, and was a chance to start afresh after “being through the mill”.
The couple purchased a home in Lunas, in southwest France, in December 2023, which they are now trying to sell.
The three-bedroom, two-bathroom home on a 5000sq m property is listed for $690,000.
A spokesperson for Higgins later said Higgins was “forced to sell her home in order to defend herself again” following defamation action brought by former defence minister Linda Reynolds.
In December 2022, Higgins received a $2.4m government compensation payout for her loss of earning capacity, legal costs, medical expenses, domestic assistance and $400,000 “for hurt, distress and humiliation” over her alleged rape.
