A Brisbane man charged with attempting to support a terrorist organisation has not applied for bail in his first court hearing.

Alaa Adam Atwani appeared in Richlands Magistrates Court this morning and was remanded in custody until June 21, when he will appear via video link.

The 27-year-old, from Algester, was arrested on Tuesday by members of the Queensland Joint Counter Terrorism Team.

He is alleged to have provided video-editing software to a relative working for Islamic State’s media unit.

The arrest followed investigations into Australians suspected of being members of a terrorist organisation in Syria and Iraq and into people in Australia suspected of providing assistance.

The offence is alleged to have occurred between October 25, 2014, and November 3, 2014 and involved Sony video editing software.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of 25 years imprisonment.
