The bodies of two women who were sucked into a whirlpool while canyoning in the Blue Mountains have been located by search crews.

The women, aged 24 and 39, were part of a tour with eight others when they disappeared under water in Wollangambe Canyon at Mount Wilson yesterday.

The 39-year-old woman has been identified as NSW Police officer, Senior Constable Kelly Foster, who has most recently been stationed at Lithgow Police Station.

The other is believed to be a student from Chiswick. She is yet to be formally identified as police await confirmation that her family members have been notified.

Witnesses said the younger woman was tipped off an inflatable lilo when it swept into a whirl pool. When Snr Cst Foster made attempts to rescue her, she was also swept into the water.

Police were contacted by other members on the tour at 2:30pm yesterday.

At midday today, the bodies were found by police divers after the search was suspended last night due to poor weather conditions.

The other members of the group were uninjured and alerted authorities.
