Police are working to determine what happened to a man and woman found dead on a Sydney boat overnight, and are treating the deaths as suspicious.

Emergency services were called to the boat at Tunks Park in Cammeray about 9pm on Wednesday after a friend called the police with a concern for their welfare.

Water police boarded the more than 14m yacht to find the bodies of Peter Ray and Lixen Wang, both aged in their early 60s.

It is understood Mr Ray was the owner of the boat and the pair were meant to spent Monday night on the boat together.

But when they hadn’t been seen or heard from by Wednesday, a friend raised the alarm.

The pair were not found with any injuries or “obvious” cause of death on a bed inside the yacht, NSW Police Detective Inspector Siobhan Munro said.

Inspector Munro said there are no obvious signs as to how the pair died, with police continuing to investigate the deaths on Thursday.

“We’re treating it as suspicious, purely because the manner and cause of death is unknown,” she said.

“All evidence is being considered and obviously all information we’re taking on-board, nothing is being discounted at this time.”

Inspector Munro confirmed detectives spent much of Thursday morning canvassing the area and speaking with people along the marina.

“Detectives are currently walking up and down the marinas and talking to people as we speak, finding out all that information,” she said.

“All of that is absolutely relevant because in a matter like this, we don’t know what has happened.”

Fire and Rescue NSW were called to the scene shortly after police boarded the boat on Wednesday evening due concerns about a potential gas or fume on the yacht.

Inspector Munro confirmed the gas or fume smelt on-board would form a line of inquiry for investigators.

Police have been told concerns for the pair’s welfare were first raised when the pair didn’t return home after spending Monday night on the boat.
