A prominent Jewish leader has slammed an anti-Semitic flyer distributed to homes in Perth’s northern suburbs by an unknown party.

The flyer, headlined “Israel murders children!” and containing a QR code link to a YouTube video titled “Israel is a Terrorist State”, was distributed to letterboxes in the Perth suburb of Iluka.

Anti-Defamation Commission chair Dvir Abramovich said anti-Semitism in Australia was surging and the flyer would add to growing concerns about the safety of the country’s Jewish community.

“I condemn this ugly and disturbing flyer which recycles an age-old anti-Semitic blood libel used by the Nazis in dehumanising Jews in order to charge Israel with absolute culpability for the situation in Gaza and to depict Jews as murderers of children,” he said.

“Its hideous purpose is to incite hatred against the Jewish community in Perth and to fan the dangerous flames of anti-Israel sentiment that may lead to violence or even worse.”

The flyer is the latest in a string of concerning incidents directed towards Jews in Australia since Hamas’s brutal attack on Israel almost a month ago.

The anti-Semitic chants at a pro-Palestine march in Sydney in the wake of the attack have been followed by numerous reports of Jewish posters being defaced and torn down.

The flyer says more than 2000 children have been “murdered” by Israeli air strikes since October 7 and accuses Israel of brazenly trying to justify its “war crimes”.

Dr Abramovich, who had family in Israel that hid in a safe room while their neighbours were killed during the October attack, noted that the flyer distributed in Perth did not mention the “barbarities” committed by Hamas.

A WA police spokesman said the flyers had been reported to police, with investigators from the State Security Investigations Group looking into the matter.
