A religious school in Sydney’s west has received an anonymous bomb threat as students were evacuated and police conducted a sweep-through.

Local member Tony Burke said it was “unthinkable to make a threat against a school”.

The threat to the Lebanese Maronite Catholic school, St Charbel’s College in Punchbowl, came at about 8.20am on Friday as kids were arriving at the school.

Parents at the Independent K-12 college received a note on Friday morning, saying: “Our school received an anonymous bomb threat this morning”.

“The police are on site and as far as I know the school has been evacuated to Roberts park.

“There is no bomb on site but the school is doing what it needs to keep our kids safe.

“The school will be sending out communications shortly to advise parents. Please don’t panic our kids are safe.

“St Charbel is with our kids and school community always.”

Mid-morning, NSW Police said the operation had concluded at the school and there was “no threat to the community”.

“A building was evacuated as a precaution; however, all people have now returned,” NSW Police said.

After being given the all-clear, St Charbel’s College sent out a note to the public saying: “NSW Police and emergency services were called to the scene and promptly arrived to ensure the safety of our community. A full and thorough sweep of the College, Monastery, and Church buildings was conducted. The site was cleared and deemed safe by NSW Police around 10am.”

“Police and emergency services remained on-site until all students were safely returned to the College grounds. The police investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

“We take all such matters extremely seriously. The safety and wellbeing of our students, staff, and community members remain our highest priority.”

Mr Burke said he’d spoken to the Principal Father Anthony and he was “glad everyone is safe”.
