Anita Cobby killer Gary Murphy seen outside hospital
Frail and shackled, Anita Cobby killer Gary Murphy sighted for the first time decades.
One of the killers of Anita Cobby has been seen in public for the first time in decades, after he was sentenced “never to be released” in 1986.
The photos of Gary Murphy, one of the five men who abducted, raped and killed Ms Cobby, were taken after he had been rushed to hospital after being bashed by a gang of inmates in a shower facility at Long Bay jail.
Murphy, 61, appeared frail, bearded and dishevelled, after more than three decades in jail.
He was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital by helicopter on June 25 after eight inmates attacked him and left him with severe head wounds.
He was transferred to a secure wing at Prince of Wales hospital to recover, and was seen leaving it today to head back to prison.
Ms Cobby, a registered nurse, and a winner of the Miss Western Sydney beauty pageant, was grabbed by Murphy, his two brothers, Michael and Les, John Travis, and Michael Murdoch, while she was walking home from dinner with work colleagues.
The men kidnapped her and dragged her to a paddock, where they raped her repeatedly, before Travis slit her throat.
Her body was found in the paddock on February 4, 1986.
By June 1986, all five of the men were convicted of abduction, rape and murder. A note from the judge saying ‘never to be released’ was attached to Murphy’s file.
Murphy’s older brother, Michael, died in jail earlier this year, aged 66.
