Christmas Day will be a mixed bag of rain and sunshine across the country as families face being separated for festivities.

The east coast will cop the brunt of the rainy weather on Friday, according to the latest forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology.

Sydneysiders hoping to be out of lockdown at the end of the week should expect a cloudy day topping 25C, with a medium chance of showers dampening already dreary spirits.

Melbourne will also be cloudy but will likely miss out on the rain, reaching 21C.

There is a half chance Brisbane will receive some rain and showers, but the sun is hoped to peek through the partial cloud. The bureau said there was uncertainty in the regions. “While there’s still uncertainty as tropical activity builds, it looks like there could be rain (or should that be rein-deer) on the way for parts of Queensland,” the BOM tweeted.

Beautiful sunny skies are in store for Adelaide and Perth, with both cities set to hover around 30C on Friday.

Adelaide will reach a top of 29C on Christmas Day and feature warm days with cool nights with light to moderate winds. Capital city conditions will be similar on both Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. Temperatures will be warmer over the rest of the state on Friday, with isolated showers in the far northwest.

While the lead up to Christmas will be wet in Darwin, Friday will likely be a little dryer. The Northern Territory capital is to hit 32C and be partly cloudy with a higher chance of a shower or thunderstorm. Hobart, not surprisingly, looks to be headed for the coolest Christmas Day, falling just shy of 20C with partly cloudy conditions. Warmer weather on Boxing Day of 24C will come but without the start of the famous Sydney to Hobart yacht race, which was cancelled due to COVID.

Canberra is expected to show a few seasons in a day, offering a mix of sun and cloud with a three in 10 chance of shower.
