Bangarra Dance Theatre presents its first cross-cultural collaboration, Horizon. Mãori choreographer Moss Te Ururangi Patterson joins forces with Bangarra alumna Deborah Brown, who descends from the Wakaid clan and Meriam people. At Sydney Opera House from June 11 to July 13; Canberra Theatre Centre from July 18 to 20; Queensland Performing Arts Centre from August 7 to 17; Arts Centre Melbourne from August 28 to September 7.

Virginia Gay’s debut as artistic director of the world’s largest cabaret festival conclusively proves her talent. Headlining this year’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival is three-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone, performing her new concert A Life in Notes. The festival invites audiences into a star-studded world of mischief, comedy and genre-bending performance. From June 7 to 22 at the Adelaide Festival Centre and Her Majesty’s Theatre.

Dark Mofo, Hobart’s hotly anticipated annual cultural festival, returns this month, bringing the Tasmanian capital to life with an avant-garde program of feasting and frolicking. The 2024 line-up includes Australia’s culinary best at the Winter Feast, seeing ARIA-winning Genesis Owusu at the Odeon, or heading over to MONA for its latest exhibition Namedropping (from June 15). Charitable causes close to the heart of legendary British designer Vivienne Westwood will benefit when fashion, jewellery and accessories from her personal collection are sold by British auction house Christie’s this month. Memorable looks dating back to autumn/winter ’83/’84 go up for auction following an exhibition at Christie’s in London, with all proceeds going to the Vivienne Foundation, Amnesty International and Médecins Sans Frontières. Online auction from June 14 to 28 with a live sale in London on June 25.

5. Portrait perfect

The Archibald Prize for portrait painting marks its 103rd year in 2024. Our most celebrated art award, open to Australian and New Zealand artists, displays the finalists and winner at its annual exhibition, accompanied by the engaging Wynne and Sulman prizes. Art Gallery of New South Wales from June 8 to September 8, followed by a regional NSW tour and a visit to Alice Springs.
