Trackside fashion is still racing along: Here’s how to take part at home

There’s nothing better than getting dressed up for the races. Here’s how you can still play along this year.

While physical distancing might stop us from celebrating the spring racing carnival like we used to, there’s nothing getting in the way of a good outfit — even in 2020.

And even if the races look different this year, potential racegoers (and those lucky enough to snag a ticket) are being encouraged to dress up and make a day of it at home, with the Australian Turf Club’s Spring Fashion Stakes competition taking place virtually. With thousands of dollars in prizes up for grabs — including cash, champagne and movie tickets — for both men and women, there’s no excuse not to give your best frock a whirl.

Two of the biggest races of the season, the Everest and Golden Eagle Day are right around the corner. So, what to wear? The Everest calls for a romantic, feminine theme, with floaty florals the calling card. A gorgeous midi dress by Zimmermann or Alice McCall could do the trick, or look to international designers like Brock Collection and Doen for a pretty take on the classic trend. Or, for a twist, try a floral suit paired with statement heels for a fashion forward take on the standard.

Stylist Jess Pecoraro is a veteran of the races, having styled some of the biggest names in Australia. Her advice: choose pieces which match your personality and show off your individual style.

“Your entire outfit does not need to be straight off the runway – pair preloved favourites from your wardrobe with key trending pieces. Vintage finds are always in fashion and we will be seeing sustainable trends continue to come to the forefront in event dressing,” Pecoraro says.

For Golden Eagle day, it’s all about dialling up the glamour. Think luxurious and elegant, and go for a dress or suit-set that oozes sophistication. Whether it be a languid gold dress which sparkles in the sun and emulates the day’s name, or an elegant black cocktail dress, Golden Eagle Day is all about bringing your best. Our favourite local designers to support include Camilla and Marc and Aje, who are both renowned for their take on party dressing — and who doesn’t need a pick-me-up during times like these? Accessorise with plenty of jewellery, because more is definitely more!

Of course, don’t forget your headpiece. A racing staple, the right piece of millinery makes the outfit. Whether you choose a statement hat that’s worthy of its own Instagram post, or a subtle headband — oversized, as is on trend right now — look to what inspires you and your outfit for the perfect pick.

As per legendary Australian milliner, Viktoria Novak says, it’s all about taking what you love and running with it. “More recently, I have been inspired by my love of nature and indoor plant collection. One of my favourite flowers is the hydrangea as I love the colour variations and have created a millinery piece called Hydrangeas Garden, which features lilac fabric flowers.”

For something more affordable, Ann Shoebridge has launched a diffusion collection, guaranteed to add a pop of colour to every outfit. “To align with the current climate, I have also launched a diffusion line called Studio Ann Shoebridge. Elegant, colourful and playful Studio Ann Shoebridge offers affordable headwear in carefully designed sophisticated styles,” Shoebridge says.

Of course, it’s important to be comfortable and at ease.

“More importantly, ensure that the styling is a true showcase of you! Let your unique personality shine through trackside and don’t forget to pair it with a smile and a glass of bubbly!” Pecoraro notes.

The spring racing season is currently underway, with the Spring Fashion Stakes taking place during the Everest and Golden Eagle Day.
