SAG Awards: men on the money in red carpet stakes

If the Screen Actors Guild Awards have shown us anything, it’s the black tuxedo is about to hit the endangered list.

While men have held the power in film and television, they have played second fiddle to women on the awards red carpet.

As women rise in the industry ranks, with some way still to go, men are finding their feet in fashion. If the Screen Actors Guild Awards have shown us anything, it’s the black tuxedo is about to hit the endangered list for such media-centric events.

Men turned out in any number of iterations of formal red carpet garb for the awards. Some went for more interesting colours in the traditional tailoring, or dropped certain elements of the formality, such as bow ties and cummerbunds, while others opted for something else entirely.

Andrew Scott, star of the hit TV series Fleabag, wore a dusty plum suit with pink silk shirt and black accessories, and Jared Harris chose a rust-coloured tux with black trims.

A tie-less Dan Levy added a knee-length satin coat adorned with a printed rose over his more traditional black suit, while The Handmaid’s Tale actor OT Fagbenle wore an embroidered blue kaftan and jacket over matching trousers.

Many of the now almost-grown-up Stranger Things stars brought a youthful energy to their ensembles: Noah Schnapp wore a powder-blue satin suit with cummerbund over the top, Caleb McLaughlin a cobalt suit with black poloneck, and Gaten Matarazzo opted for a checked blue-and-black tuxedo.

And women such as Millie Bobby Brown, Patricia Arquette, Jane Lynch, Sian Clifford and Margaret Qualley opted for tailored ensembles.

On the more glamorous side, women went voluminous, ruffled, frilled and frivolous, or sleek and streamlined.

Standouts included Kathryn Newton in tangerine Valentino ready-to-wear with tiered silk skirt and power sleeves, and Cynthia Erivo in swirling pink-and-red silk Schiaparelli.

Usually a red carpet winner, Margot Robbie’s tartan and tiered Chanel dress left some cold, while Nicole Kidman played things safe in a Michael Kors gown with gently ruffled skirt and thigh-high split.

Major points went to Scarlett Johansson in teal silk Armani sheath with plunge front, Sophie Turner in hot pink Louis Vuitton sheath, and Zoe Kravitz in an apricot Oscar de la Renta column dress.
