The best-dressed stars at GQ’s Men of the Year Awards put their own unique spins on menswear. Others dialled up the fantasy and experimentation. There’s no night in Australian media quite like GQ’s Men of the Year Awards, especially when it comes to style. At the tail-end of each year, the men’s title recognises change-makers across fashion, culture, art, and sport in a dazzling ceremony, which is held this year at Sydney’s Bondi Pavilion. Given the beach location, each attendee put their own spin on black tie with a Bondi twist, favouring formal outfits that carried a casual insouciance.
Troye Sivan, the Perth-raised performer, and creative tour de force, led the best-dressed list. The singer, actor and GQ Man of the Year recipient wore an all-white Prada ensemble and shorts, with a black nylon cap adding an insouciant, fun touch, styled by Australian stylist Nicchia Wippell. Two weeks ago, the ‘Rush’ singer attended the Arias in a painterly blouse and trousers from the Milanese label, proving his avant-garde approach to red carpet dressing is a winning formula.
Robert Irwin, the wildlife conservationist and winner of Social Force of the Year, kept it simple in a classic black tuxedo — a big difference from the khakis much of Australia is used to seeing him in.
But while many guests opted for classic tuxes, the beachside location also called for more relaxed versions of tailoring. The actor Josh Heuston sported a double-breasted blazer with an open collar, while Matildas player Kyah Simon kept it cool in tailoring by BOSS when picking up the team’s award for Team of the Year, which again, was a big difference from the nylon she wears on the field.
Another star was Riley Keough, the actress and granddaughter of Elvis Presley, who attended in a Chanel tweed coat with a skirt and top underneath, alongside the film producer Gina Gammell. The Daisy Jones and the Six actress was recently announced as a brand ambassador for the French maison, so her choice to wear an outfit from the brand was an apt decision.
Keough’s award was presented by Australian supermodel Abbey Lee Kershaw, who wore a black sheer-front dress by Gucci. Willow Smith, the singer, actor and daughter of Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith, donned a sharp black Dior suit with layered jewellery, worn shirtless for a summery touch.
It was style at the level you’d expect from a GQ event, but even then, the attendees’ unique sartorial approaches meant there was an element of surprise. What would fashion be without it?
GQ‘s Men of the Year issue is on sale inside The Australian this Friday, December 8.
