Lady Gaga, Saweetie and Lil Nas X rule the Grammys red carpet

From cartoon capers to golden-era glamour, the Grammys red carpet delivered it all.

The Grammys red carpet is often the hot mess of awards ceremonies. This year was no different, albeit with some glamour thrown in to counter the crazy.

There were a few major trends that emerged within this fashion microcosm – not all of which should be attempted at home, or at your next formal event.

But if that event is a five-year-old’s party, it’s game on.

Cartoon-like capers abounded, and nowhere more so than on Tayla Parx, whose spiked green onesie had many likening it to a dinosaur.

On her Instagram, she stated, “If Bowser was a bad bitch,” in reference to the turtle-like creature from Super Mario Bros. Interestingly, Zombie Turtle NFTs took to Twitter to claim her as an honorary one of their own, “repping for the (insert turtle emoji) mafia”.

But cartoony can be cute, too. Japanese Breakfast’s over-achieving frontwoman Michelle Zauner was in full bloom in Valentino, like a bunch of daffodils come to life in her vibrant petal-like minidress.

Tia Tia’s starfish hair, green cut-out gown and octopus-like bag conjured up an exotic underwater creature – ideal fodder for the next Little Mermaid franchise? Follicularly speaking, hair took a colourful turn that would be perfectly suited to comic-book characters, whether the Kid Laroi’s lavender locks, J Balvin’s blue ’do or Omer Fedi’s vermilion that had this writer doing a double take.

Justin Bieber avoided all talk of hair by covering his with a bright pink beanie. The less said about his swamping suit, the better. The shocking pink was more suited to Saweetie’s Valentino ensemble, a bow-bra top with full skirt and matching gloves, and plenty of sparkle from a girl’s best friend – in short, a modern Marilyn Monroe.

Sheer gowns were as ubiquitous as Jon Batiste’s wins on the night (his sequined harlequin suit surely deserved its own award), while Billie Eilish continued her great cover-up (sunglasses included) in gothic black. High glamour came from Lady Gaga, who channelled golden era chanteuses in the vein of Peggy Lee, undoubtedly in deference to her Grammy co-winner, Tony Bennett.

St Vincent continued the boudoir chic trend of the Oscars in ruffle-hemmed Gucci, while Lil Nas X again proved why he reigns supreme in the men’s department, this time in a white embellished pairing from Balmain, finished off with a butterfly motif and smile that could power the event itself.
