Aussie ex-refugee Adut Akech named Britain’s model of the year
Adelaide’s Adut Akech was named Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in London.
On a night in which Aussie talent shone bright, one was a veritable star.
Adelaide’s Adut Akech was named Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in London on Monday.
The former South Sudanese refugee was named above a field of nominees that included Winnie Harlow, Adwoa Aboah and Kaia Gerber, daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford.
“This award is bigger than me; it’s bigger than a title in the industry. It’s for every young girl or boy refugee around the world in a tough position who are unheard or unseen,” Akech said after her win.
“People who see representation or validation in the work that I do — this is for them. If there wasn’t any inclusivity, I wouldn’t be here.”
Akech has appeared on the cover of seven global Vogue titles this year, five of which were the all-important September issues.
She also appears in this month’s 60th anniversary issue of Vogue Australia.
Since her debut under exclusive contract for Paris house Saint Laurent at the end of 2016, the 19-year-old has been on a meteoric trajectory that has seen her take to the catwalk for the world’s leading luxury houses and fashion brands, including Valentino, Givenchy, Prada and Chanel, where she was a favourite of the late Karl Lagerfeld.
One of Akech’s longtime role models, Naomi Campbell, was named Fashion Icon.
Fellow Australians shining on the red carpet included Kylie Minogue, Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts and Shanina Shaik, wearing a design by London-based Australian couturiers Ralph & Russo.
The awards, organised by the British Fashion Council, highlight the best of British and international fashion.
Italian luxury house Bottega Veneta and its designer, Daniel Lee, scooped up a total of four awards, including brand and designer of the year. Alexander McQueen designer Sarah Burton was given the Trailblazer Award, and Rihanna the Urban Luxe category.
Designer Giorgio Armani was honoured for his outstanding achievements, and was welcomed on stage by longtime associates Blanchett and Julia Roberts.
