Catherine, Princess of Wales, has arrived at Westminster Abbey for King Charles’s coronation. She wore a formal robe over an ivory silk Alexander McQueen dress, embroidered with rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock motifs, the national flowers of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland respectively.

Kate accessorised with pearl-and-diamond drop earrings, once belonging to her late mother-in-law and the previous Princess of Wales, Diana, as well as the diamond George VI Festoon Necklace, commissioned by King George VI in 1950 for his daughter and Kate’s late grandmother-in-law, Elizabeth II, then-Princess Elizabeth.

In place of a tiara, Kate chose to finish her ensemble with a silver bullion, crystal and silver headpiece by Jess Collett and Alexander McQueen, embroidered with three-dimensional leaf motifs.

Her daughter Princess Charlotte, who recently celebrated her eighth birthday, wore a matching Alexander McQueen dress and headpiece. It’s not the first time that the mother and daughter have worn coordinating outfits for a ceremonial occasion. Recall last September at the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, when Kate and Charlotte wore matching Alexander McQueen coat dresses, in black instead of white.

Two days ago, Kate heralded the then-incoming coronation in a midi-length coat by Eponine. Always one to nod to context or history with her outfits, Kate incorporated all three colours of the Union Jack into her ensemble: bright red outerwear, a white shirt dress by Suzannah and matching Gianvito Rossi pumps, and blue lining in her coat, slivers of which could be seen as she walked. Kate was last seen wearing the coat in 2022 for the late monarch’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, then, sported with a pair of navy suede heels.

The day before the coronation saw Kate adhere to her patriotic palette, wearing a white long-sleeved sheath at a pre-coronation lunch in Buckingham Palace, and a royal blue Self-Portrait dress at a pre-coronation reception, where the princess greeted sovereigns and heads of state including First Lady of the United States Jill Biden, Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco, and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark.

Following the coronation in the abbey, Kate will join William, George, Louis and Charlotte in the procession back to Buckingham Palace, where they will take their positions beside Charles, Camilla and other senior royals on the balcony to watch the flypast.
