Ford is the car maker that brought us the V8-powered Falcon GT and wild Ranger Raptor, but its future is looking increasingly electric as the automotive giant reimagines some of its best-known nameplates for a zero-emission future.

One of the USA’s biggest producers of pick-up trucks and muscle cars, Ford is in the midst of an electric transformation - and it’s going to impact what you’ll find in Australian showrooms soon.

Remarkably, Ford is using its most famous gas-guzzling models to lead this electric charge, with both the F-150 ute and Mustang sports car evolving into electric vehicles.

While the F-150 Lightning (as the EV is officially known) isn’t locked in for local sale, the Mustang Mach-E, an all-electric but very sporty SUV is.

Ford Australia recently announced that the Mustang Mach-E would become its first EV passenger car available locally, joining the E-Transit and E-Transit Custom delivery vans.

Surprisingly, after years of waiting, Ford Australia CEO, Andrew Birkic, confirmed at the recent Australian Grand Prix that the Mustang Mach-E will be on local roads before the end of 2023

“We are thrilled to bring the Mustang Mach-E to Australia,” Birkic said. “It’s an exciting time for electric vehicles in Australia, and Mach-E gives us the chance to do what Mustang has done best for decades – put a smile on customer’s faces.

“We know Australians love that feeling of driving a performance car, and the Mach-E will mean they can enjoy that iconic Mustang freedom with all the benefits that an EV offers.”

The Mustang Mach-E will be available in multiple specifications locally, including the high-performance GT model. This version packs a punch from its dual-electric motors, making 358kW of power and 860Nm of torque. That’s enough for it to sprint 0-100km/h in just 3.7 seconds, which is quicker than the Mustang coupe powered by a V8 petrol engine.

But the Mustang Mach-E, E-Transit and F-150 Lighting are just the start of Ford’s transition to an electric future that will leverage its more famous model names.

The Blue Oval brand also recently revealed the all-new Explorer, an electric take on its popular SUV. The electric Explorer will be built in Germany, as part of Ford’s technical partnership with Volkswagen that sees the two companies sharing vehicle platforms.

That means the Explorer EV won’t be sold in Ford’s home market, but will be offered in the UK, which means it will be available in right-hand drive and therefore opens the door for Ford Australia.

Ford of Europe has also just revealed the new Transit Courier EV, an electric alternative to the Volkswagen Caddy. This gives the brand an electric platform for the Puma compact SUV to use, which could be another vital new EV for Ford Australia to offer.

While there hasn’t been any official confirmation that the Explorer, Puma or other upcoming EVs will join the local range, 2023 looks set to be a turning point for Ford Australia and its electric aspirations.
