Michaela Coel and Bridgerton are the winners from the 2021 SAG Award nominations
After public outcry at her shocking absence from the Golden Globes nominations, I May Destroy You’s Michaela Coel nabs a SAG nomination, and so did the cast of Bridgerton.
First the Golden Globe nominations, now the Screen Actors Guild (SAGs) notices – awards season has officially begun.
This morning, the SAGs announced their list of the best performances in film and television from the past year, with several surprising nominations, and a few post-Golden Globes course corrects.
Where the Globes opted to celebrate broad comedies, such as the controversial Emily In Paris, the SAGs recognised one of their predecessor’s biggest snubs: Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You. The British comedian was nominated in the Best Actress category for her devastating performance in the miniseries, which she also created, wrote and directed, and has been called some of the best television of the past decade.
Elsewhere, the SAGs spotlighted new and emerging talent. The cast of Bridgerton was nominated in Best Dramatic Ensemble – the SAGs’ equivalent of the Best Drama Series prize – after becoming Netflix’s most-watched series of all time since its debut in December.
Bridgerton’s leading man Regé-Jean Page, the show’s rakish, spoon-licking Duke of Hastings, was nominated in Best Actor, alongside veteran names including Jason Bateman (Ozark), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) and Sterling K Brown (This Is Us).
As with the Golden Globes, though, the real winner was streaming platforms. Netflix scored several nominations across the board, including sweeping an entire Television category – Female Actor in a Drama Series, where all five nominations were for Netflix shows, including three for The Crown and two for Ozark.
In film, Netflix picked up nominations for its films Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Trial of the Chicago 7, Mank, Pieces of a Woman and Hillbilly Elegy, including notices for stars Amy Adams – competing in Best Actress against Carey Mulligan in Promising Young Woman, Vanessa Kirby in Pieces of a Woman and Frances McDormand in Nomadland – and Glenn Close.
The most-decorated actors on nomination morning were Olivia Colman, star of The Crown and The Father, who received three nominations in total and Chadwick Boseman, who received four posthumous nominations, including two in ensemble, a Best Actor and a Best Supporting Actor nod. The late Black Panther star is the favourite to win Best Actor for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
A surprise snub, though, for Amanda Seyfried, who has been garnering Oscar buzz for her performance in Mank, including a Golden Globe nomination yesterday. She was sadly nowhere to be seen on SAG nomination morning.
It’s not the end of her Oscar hopes, though. In recent years, Regina King – director of this year’s beloved drama One Night In Miami – won an Oscar for If Beale Street Could Talk despite not being nominated at the SAGs. (The winner that year was Emily Blunt, for A Quiet Place.) The awards season race is still afoot for Seyfried.
The ceremony crowning this year’s winners will take place on the morning of 5 April.
