Clive Palmer’s son pays $5m for Fig Tree Pocket property, Brisbane

Like father like son, Michael Palmer, son of Clive, has been busy buying prestige Brisbane property.

Like father like son, Michael Palmer has been busy buying prestige Brisbane property. The scion of mining entrepreneur Clive has spent $5.1 million on a Fig Tree Pocket riverfront home, not far from his dad’s recent purchase, and his existing acreage. The 1ha property had hit the market two years ago with $7m expectations. It is just two doors along from the recent acquisition of his dad. Earlier this year Clive spent $7.5m on Rivergum Retreat, the home of Linc Energy founder Peter Bond, who had wanted $12m when it was listed for sale in 2016. The 28-year-old Michael’s other properties include two houses in the Gold Coast’s Paradise Point, where there are five homes owned by the Palmer clan.

Boyd home up for grabs

Bridgford House, a Black Rock property designed by Melbourne mid-century modernist architect Robin Boyd, has been listed for sale by fellow architect Maggie Edmond, widow of the late architect Peter Corrigan. Boyd built the home for Charles and Phyllis Bridgford in the mid-1950s at a cost of £9500. It ranked as Boyd’s largest commission at the time.

The single-level classic home has been kept in its original state by its second owners, although the keen sailor’s dry dock boat room was converted into living space the mid-1960s. There are concerns, with no heritage protection, that the home could sell to a developer due to its prize 655sq m Beach Road location facing Half Moon Bay Beach. Jellis Craig agent Belinda Anderson has a $2.7m-$2.9m guide for its October 27 auction.

Lake House changes hands

Lake House at Cressy, Tasmania’s finest Georgian home, has been quietly sold. There’s talk of a $9.3m sale by Virgin Australia co-founder Rob Sherrard, who had restored the home after he paid $4,805,000 in 2004. It has been bought by local farmer Robert Price. Price was mentioned in a UK Country Life magazine when he became engaged last year to Elle Clarke, daughter of Tom and Mandy Clarke of Quorn Hall, a Campbell Town family whose pastoral activities date back to the 1830s. Lake House, southwest of Launceston, was built in 1830 by London shipowner Robert Corney, inspired by architect Sir John Soane. The home has eight bedrooms and eight bathrooms over three levels. Price’s parents, Athel and Annie Price, are from Scotland’s Bolfracks House, a 1620ha farm listed last year at £11m ($20.5m).

$11m bolthole for Stokes

Seven West Media tycoon Kerry Stokes has spent $11m on an in-between home on Perth’s Dalkeith dress circle. He’s bought the Swan River home of mining company chairman Wolf Martinick as a bolthole while he rebuilds his longtime riverfront mansion. His purchase is just three doors down from his 3200sq m holding he has resided in since paying about $200,000 the late 1970s. It comprises a near new three-level Riverstone-built home with five bedrooms, library, home theatre and wine cellar.
