Veteran adman Scott Whybin, the former boss of Whybin/TBWA, has emerged as the $11 million buyer of a luxury penthouse in South Yarra. The Rothelowman-designed bachelor pad sits atop the Hawskburn development built for developer Peter Gibson by Crema Constructions above a Bilia Volvo showroom. Gibson has been developing high-end apartments, houses and townhouses for more than 35 years specialising in Toorak and South Yarra, and has recently moved, with his son, Christo, into delivering a larger-scale project at Glen Iris, through still targeting luxury owner-occupiers. The $11m sale came with eight-car basement garaging with private lift up to the 650sq m space on the fifth floor. It has just the three bedrooms and three bathrooms, with floor-to-ceiling glass offering 360-degree views of the district skyline. Whybin has been a longtime South Yarra local, having made the move south from Newcastle, via Sydney and London. Whybin founded advertising agency Whybin\TBWA, resigning last year after 21 years — a year after he’d been inducted into the AdNews Hall of Fame.

Top engineer sells up

Andy Hegh, who long headed civil engineering company Pavex, and wife Allison are moving from Brisbane to Perth to be closer to family. They have sold their 1930s Brisbane mansion and secured the 1890s Aldgate House in East Fremantle. The redundant Hamilton property on Riverview Terrace had been listed at $4.3mn six months ago with Alma Clark, of Alma Clark Real Estate. They’ve secured $3.575m for the four-bedroom American gable-style property.

7-Eleven boss upgrades

Angus McKay, the newly installed boss of 7-Eleven, appears set on upgrading homes in Melbourne’s east. McKay and wife Tracey have sold their Malvern home recently. Having paid $2.15m in 2004, the refurbished four-bedroom family home came with pool on its 1000sq m block with deep rear garden. McKay, who had been at The Skilled Group before taking the top job at 7-Eleven last year, is rumoured to have bought in Hawthorn, pinpointed as paying about $8.94m at private auction for a three-level mansion on a 1600sq m Kooyongkoot Road holding. It comes with plunge pool, a pavilion/gym with bar and adjacent night-lit, north-south synthetic tennis court.

Eagle looks to offload nest

Former AFL West Coast Eagles star Brent Staker is selling his designer North Coogee, Perth investment. Staker bought the home in 2010, a year after he was traded to the Brisbane Lions. It has been a rental ever since, bouncing around in its $650-$750 asking rental. Set over two levels, the contemporary home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Acton Coogee has set a September 2 auction. Staker played 110 games for the Eagles from 2003 to 2009 before being traded to the Lions, where he played 50 games over five years.
