Golden Globes 2021: The hottest red carpet looks

No official red carpet? No problem. Instagram and a good backdrop was all the stars needed to shine.

The pandemic has changed red carpet style, but it hasn’t killed it. Yes, what once took place at a central venue in front of a throbbing paparazzi pit is no longer considered Covid-safe, but the glitz and glamour component of awards ceremonies endures.

Celebrities aren’t accepting their awards while wearing sweatpants at home (unless their name is Jason Sudeikis). As we saw at the 78th Golden Globe Awards, dressing up is still a very big part of the whole awards experience. It doesn’t matter that there’s no after party to be photographed leaving — one Instagram post is all it takes to remind the world that you were there, and you looked fabulous.

Of course, there are always going to be standouts—even when the playing field is less even (in true Emily in Paris form, Lily Collins, for example, staged an entire photoshoot in an actual forest. How to top that?!)

But Anya Taylor-Joy, the orb-eyed beauty who took home Best Actress in a Miniseries or Motion Picture for TV for her performance in The Queen’s Gambit, didn’t need a pastoral backdrop to elevate her look. Dressed custom Dior Haute Couture by Maria Grazia Chiuri, she looked truly effervescent.

She also sparked what seemed to become a green theme—from Cynthia Erivo’s bright lime Valentino gown to Dan Levy’s chartreuse-coloured suit (also by Valentino), the tone was a popular choice.

The Great actress Elle Fanning stunned in a periwinkle blue silk number by Gucci, which contoured her frame like liquid. Also choosing classic was Amanda Seyfried, who stepped back into the silent era with a peachy Oscar de la Renta gown. It reminded us of something her Mank character Marion Davies might wear.

Bucking the ‘classic’ trend were actresses Sarah Paulson and Rosamund Pike, who both opted for sculptural dresses with full-bodied skirts. Pike’s gown was by exciting young British designer Molly Goddard, who created that inimitable bubblegum pink tutu for Jodie Comer’s character Villanelle in Killing Eve.

Paulson wore a black, ‘50s-style dress with an off-the shoulder neckline by Prada. But her creative accessory was what really made the look—a custom lilac sequinned plaster cast complete with a Prada logo. Who knew a broken arm could look so chic?

The Lee siblings, who were the official 78th Golden Globes ambassadors, were some of the few people who actually got to attend a ceremony. And they did so in style, both wearing Gucci by Alessandro Michele. Show-stopping style must run in the family—their father, director Spike Lee, is known for making statements on the red carpet.

The leading men didn’t disappoint either, with both Jared Leto, who appears to have tuned in from somewhere in the desert, and British actor Josh O’Conner, who appears to have tuned in from a rose garden, sharing a Globes outfit snap.

Justin Theroux played it a little safer with his outfit choice, but compliments must be paid for the sleek velvet blazer by French label Saint Laurent.
