Review: this FiFish gives you 4K vision in the deep blue

Drones aren’t limited to the skies anymore and underwater models with cameras capable of capturing clear imagery and 4K video have hit the market.

Stunning underwater drone footage

Ever wondered what’s going on in the ocean around you as you swim? There’s a drone for that.

But judging by the photos taken with the V6 FiFish, you might wish you hadn’t.

Drones aren’t limited to the skies anymore and underwater models with cameras capable of capturing clear imagery and 4K video are coming into vogue.

This particular model, tested by The Australian at Murray Rose Pool and Seven Shillings Beach in Sydney’s Rose Bay, can hover, lower, turn, flip and glide through the water around your boat while you dive, or even along cruise the sand along the beach to help you find your lost sunglasses.

It can also frustrate you as you learn how to command it.

The first question The Australian was asked when locking in the review was have we flown a drone before. And now we know why.

While it’s not exactly hard to move around, learning the controls can take some getting used to for a novice.

The device uses six propellers to move. They’re controlled by an Xbox-like controller which connects to the device via a cable.

The device connects to the user's mobile phone via a Wi-Fi connection. The user can see directly out of the device’s camera from their mobile which can attach to the controller or slip it into a set of goggles to simulate a semi-VR like experience.

The drone drew quite the crowd at the beach, with several stopping to ask what it was. The kids also enjoyed swimming along side it.

I should apologise to the man whose sunnies I couldn’t help find – a result of my driving skills, not the drone – and I should thank the kind woman who allowed me to tail her paddleboard with the drone.

Its uses, of course, aren’t limited to some fun by the shore.

The device has drawn some big interest among deep-sea fishermen, divers and marine biologists.

The Australian got about three hours’ playtime on a full charge.

The verdict? At $3599 it’s probably not something you’d buy to use a couple times over summer. But if you’re likely to take the boat offshore, record content under water or are simply an ocean enthusiast, this is probably one to have at the top of your Christmas list.
