Myer in the pink with latest collection

MYER’S spring-summer collection launch had everything its competitor David Jones did not last week.

MYER’S spring-summer collection launch had everything its competitor David Jones did not last week. In particular, colour — and some of its former designers.

Alex Perry opened the show with Myer’s leading lady Jennifer Hawkins wearing lilac and pink; even pink highlights in her hair.

With Perry and fellow Myer recruit Little Joe Woman, by Gail Elliott, taking a lot of the spotlight, the latter with a special catwalk appearance by Australian export Nicole Trunfio, there was another name for whom the department store has high hopes.

Johnny Schembri’s By Johnny label and its youthful, sporty take on fashion has struck a chord with the 20-something crowd, and has been one of the most popular labels spotted at spring racing events around the country in the past two years.

Having just celebrated five years in business, Schembri feels his new Myer contract is an important milestone.

“It’s our first department store account,” Schembri said. “It’s an exciting time for the brand — it’s serious.

“This is taking it to that next level, expanding the reach, not just being in those beautiful boutiques but being stocked in one of Australia’s biggest department stores.”

The buy is larger than most in its first season and will be on the floor in four states from the outset.

Nicole Naccarella, group general manager of fashion at Myer, said this was with good reason.

“His range is so commercial and so clever and it’s quite unique, too,” Ms Naccarella said.

“He just understands how to make a woman look beautiful. Even if you’re a bit bigger, the way he cuts the garments is very clever. I was so impressed with him at fashion week. We were fortunate enough to lure him across.

“He’s a little pocket rocket, with so much energy — we want to get him into stores and do workshops with customers.”

Perry didn’t hold back his excitement at his return to Myer after his unceremonious dumping from David Jones after seven years.

“I’m excited about everything,” said Perry. “The big glossy runway, Jennifer Hawkins opening in Alex Perry. If there’s a sausage roll later on that’d make my life perfect.”
