Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page joins Netflix film The Gray Man

It’s the most expensive project the streaming platform has ever commissioned. So who do you cast? The golden trio of Chris Evans, Ryan Gosling and Bridgerton’s Duke of Hastings.

What you need to know about The Gray Man is this: Netflix is trying to make their own James Bond series. And they’re willing to pay anything to make it happen. As in, “upward” of $200 million, according to sources in the know.

The Gray Man is set to be the streaming platform’s most expensive and highest budget anthology film series yet, with hopes that it will turn into a sequel-churning, globetrotting franchise for them. Based on a popular series of nine spy novels by Mark Greaney, the story follows a freelance assassin known as Gray Man (alias: former CIA operative — when are they ever anything but — Court Gentry) on the run from his former employers, including a fellow professional killer Lloyd Hansen. It’s assassin vs assassin in this action thriller.

Gosling is set to star as Gentry, with Evans doing an about face and playing the villain Hansen. Today, Netflix announced the full cast, which includes literal Bond girl Ana de Armas, Bridgerton’s Duke of Hastings Regé-Jean Page, Billy Bob Thornton, Alfre Woodard, Wagner Moura, Jessica Henwick, Dhanush and Julia Butters. The Russo Brothers (Captain America: Civil War, the last two Marvel Avengers films) have written the film and will direct.

It is not known yet who Page, the breakout star of Bridgerton will play in the series. But it is known that he’s about to be a very busy man. Filming on season two of Netflix’s most popular miniseries ever is about to commence, and will run from February until September — though with the story focus set to shift from Daphne and the Duke to Anthony Bridgerton and his new paramour Kate Sharma, perhaps Page’s filming schedule will be less onerous.

Outside of Bridgerton, though, his dance card is filling up quickly. Since the series dropped on Christmas Day, Page has added the Dungeons & Dragons film to his roster, starring alongside Hugh Grant — who will be playing the villain — and Chris Pine, another Hollywood Chris. And somewhere in between all this filming, Page has to squeeze in an appearance at the virtual Screen Actors Guild Awards in April, where he is a double nominee for Best Supporting Actor and Best Ensemble for Bridgerton.

Production on The Gray Man begins in March with a view to releasing in late 2021 or early 2022, with the Russo brothers recently teasing that fans of Captain America will be shocked by the distinctive look of Evans’ villain in the film.

“He’s going to wear some crazy shit in this one,” Joe Russo said on a podcast. “He’s a really unique character, and this is Evans as a villain so it’s a really interesting character and I think he’s going to flex quite a bit in this role.”

But what, pray tell, is the artist formerly known as Bridgerton’s Duke of Hastings going to wear in the series? We can’t wait.
